Tonight we dive into Luke 18:9-14 and explore the biblical necessity of humble brokenness as the only path to justification before God. In this passage we see the Pharisee represents those who exalt themselves by comparing their behavior to others and relying on outward religious works like fasting and tithing. This is in contrast to the Tax Collector who represents the justified person who acknowledges their sin and pleads for God's mercy through humble brokenness.

We need to make sure we do not let barriers get in the way of us coming humbly before God. These five barriers are:

1. Time: The busyness and noise of modern life distracts us from sitting with the Lord.

2. Comparison: Using horizontal standards (other people) instead of the vertical standard (Christ).

3. Faulty View of God: Misunderstanding God's justice by assuming His grace means He will overlook guilt.

4. Dishonesty: Running from the reality of one's own brokenness.

5. Momentary Conviction: Treating spiritual growth as a routine or an emotional moment rather than a daily habit.

Let's shift from self-justification to a desperate reliance on divine mercy. Let's move past shame and run toward the cross, acknowledging that while we are guilty, Jesus offers abounding grace to those who come in brokenness.
